Nursing License Information

Understanding nursing licenses, the Nurse Licensure Compact, and state-specific requirements for travel nurses.

Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) is an agreement between participating states that allows nurses to have one multistate license, enabling them to practice in their home state and other compact states without obtaining additional licenses.

Benefits of Compact Licensure

  • • Practice in multiple states with one license
  • • Faster onboarding for travel assignments
  • • Cost savings (no need for multiple state licenses)
  • • Greater flexibility in choosing assignments

Licensing FAQs

Can I work in a non-compact state with a compact license?

No. If you want to work in a non-compact state, you must obtain a separate license from that state's board of nursing, even if you hold a compact license.

What happens if I move to a different state?

If you move to a compact state, you'll need to apply for a new compact license in your new state of residence. If moving to a non-compact state, you'll need to apply for a single-state license there.

How long does it take to get licensed in California?

California's licensing process typically takes 8-12 weeks, sometimes longer. We recommend applying well in advance of your desired start date for California assignments.
